Understanding Wear Layers
Share
One of the most important factors in the durability of vinyl flooring is the wear layer. This is the clear protective top layer that sits above the design layer of the plank or tile. Its purpose is to protect the floor from scratches, scuffs and everyday wear.
Wear layers are typically measured in millimetres and the thicker the wear layer, the more protection the floor has in high-traffic environments.
Typical Wear Layer Thicknesses
|
Wear Layer |
Typical Use |
|
0.2mm – 0.3mm |
Light residential use such as bedrooms or low-traffic areas |
|
0.4mm – 0.5mm |
Industry standard for most residential flooring |
|
0.55mm and above |
Commercial or heavy-duty environments with higher foot traffic |
Many commercial installations — including retail, offices, hospitality and busy residential areas — use 0.55mm wear layers or greater to provide extra durability and long-term performance.
Wear Layers in Gluedown LVT vs SPC Click Flooring
Both gluedown LVT and SPC click flooring are available with a range of wear layer options. In many cases, the wear layer specification is more important than the thickness of the plank itself, as it determines how well the floor will stand up to everyday use.
Choosing the right wear layer ensures your flooring performs well in the environment it’s being installed in, whether that’s a home, office, retail space or other commercial setting.
All Merrinton flooring comes with an enhanced 0.55 mm wear layer as standard.
